Psychometric properties of the Social Media Addiction Questionnaire (SMAQ) in university students in Ecuador.

Abstract
The increase in social media use has established digital addiction as a risk factor for developing mental health disorders in young adults. This dependence manifests as a pattern of uncontrolled behaviors which, together with the search for validation and fear of exclusion (FOMO), transforms initial satisfaction into a need for immediate gratification. The main objective of the study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Social Media Addiction Questionnaire (SMAQ) in university students in Ecuador. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional design with a descriptive-instrumental scope was used. The sample consisted of 410 students (135 men, 275 women) between the ages of 18 and 30. Both the AFE and AFC revealed a structure consisting of four factors that explain 56.4% of the total variance, with a reliability of 0.953 (Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega), with no statistically significant differences according to gender. It is concluded that the ARS is valid and reliable for application in clinical and research settings in the Ecuadorian university population.
