Abstract
This study analyzes the main theories and approaches to state security in an Ecuadorian context with the purpose of characterizing the current strategic environment by identifying the challenges faced by the armed forces in the face of the most relevant security risks and threats, Through a mixed methodological design that encompasses qualitative and quantitative components, with emphasis on descriptive and non-experimental aspects, surveys were applied to security experts, thus allowing them to collect their perceptions of the predominant threats and evaluate the institutional performance of the Armed Forces in this area. The findings obtained offer valuable inputs to set up suitable strategies that strengthen the state's response capacity, allowing to more effectively face the challenges of an environment marked by the complexity that violence represents and the various transformations around it
