Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the sociodemographic characteristics and nutritional status of children between 1 and 5 years of age in the parish of Angochagua. It is a descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study using
information from the database of the project “Nutritional strengthening in children from 1 to 5 years of age in the rural
area of the Northern Ecuadorian Sierra” belonging to the Technical University of the North. The sociodemographic data
were obtained through the application of a survey to the families in which the children of the study population were found,
in order to determine the social conditions in which each child lives. The evaluation of nutritional status was obtained by
measuring the weight, height, arm circumference and head circumference of each infant. As results, regarding nutritional
status, it was identified that there is a high percentage of children with grade I chronic malnutrition, with a higher prevalence in infants between 2 and 4 years of age. With regard to sociodemographic conditions, several social factors that
favor malnutrition were identified, such as the education of the caregiver in charge of the infant, the mother’s occupation
and the lack of monthly income of the families, which leads to a significant impact on the social and nutritional status of
the children.
