Abstract

Due to the increasing demand for cloud computing services, along with the advent of the Internet of Things and the growing number of network-connected devices, it becomes compulsory to explore different forthcoming solutions to have more flexible, easy-expandable technology platforms available and also capable of tolerating and supporting new and current services. Exploring these technological approaches must necessarily start from theoretical foundations. Consequently, this document intends to clarify SDN and NVF concepts, which readers usually need to understand. Three leading questions have been established to conceptualize these terms: What do SDN and NFV mean? Why are SDN and NFV necessary? What kind of advantages do SDN and NFV offer for data networking? Based on selectively analyzing relevant documentation, the answers will provide enough information to understand and distinguish the scopes of both terms. Additionally, clarifying these terms will aid in identifying the features of a new network architecture, which could be implanted within mobile network operators. This new network architecture will face the technological challenges resulting from the increasing demand for network services.
